book description
Our language is riddled with hundreds of frequently quoted but rarely acknowledged quotes. Ralph Keyes Quote Verifier takes into account not only classic misquotes like "Nice guys finish last" and "Play it again, Sam," but also more surprising quotes like "Ain't I a woman?" and "Golf spoils a good walk," as well as the origin of popular sayings like "Opera ain't over until the fat lady sings," "No one washes a rental car," and "Make my day." Keyes' in-depth research routinely confounds widely held assumptions about who said what, where, and when. Organized in an easy-to-access dictionary format, The Quote Verifier also includes special sections highlighting commonly misquoted people and genres like Yogi Berra and Oscar Wilde, famous last words, and little-remembered movie quotes. An invaluable resource not only for those with a professional need for accurate citing, but also for anyone interested in the origins of words and phrases. The Quote Verifier is not only a fascinating piece of literary research, but also a great read.

Fiery naval combat and hidden intrigue are some of the fascinating ingredients of a biography that brings to life the most illustrious and formidable figure in the United States Navy. His name is carried by more than two dozen towns and cities. Here's finally an in-depth exploration of Stephen Decatur's complex character. Reckless in his youth, cold but fearless in battle, loved by those who sailed beneath him but conspiring with his rivals in the race for glory, Decatur comes to life in this compelling naval story. Decatur's heroism became mainstream news in 1804 when, sent to recover a captured American ship in Tripoli during the Barbary Wars, he ordered his men to burn the captured ship and then sailors from the Tripoli fleet attacked hand-to-hand. . struggle. His brilliance continued during the War of 1812, after which he was promoted to the highest naval rank of Commodore. Decatur not only proved intrepid on the quarterdeck, but was also incredibly effective in Mediterranean diplomacy. Spectacular relations with Islamic powers heralded American involvement in the region in the 21st century. Readers will also discover the identity of the woman he traded for a refined beauty pursued by lovers as varied as Napoleon Bonaparte's younger brother and Aaron Burr. Through newly discovered documents, many official, some very personal, biographer Leonard Guttridge traces the elements that left Decatur inexorably in the shadow of murder. Here, at last, is the full story of the man who gave the most momentous toast in the history of American celebrations, when in 1816 he declared: "Our country! In its dealings with foreign nations, it will always be right; country, right or wrong." evil!" book description
"America has a beautiful house," writes Anatol Lieven, "but in the basement lives a demon whose name is nationalism." In this controversial critique of America's role in the world, Lieven argues that since 9/11, America's foreign policy has been shaped by the special nature of our national identity, which encompasses two contradictory characteristics. One, "The American Creed," is a civic nationalism that advocates for liberty, democracy, and the rule of law. It is our greatest legacy to the world. But our quasi-religious belief in the "Creed" tends toward a dangerous "messianic" element in American nationalism, the desire to spread American values and American democracy to everyone, regardless of the needs and desires of others. The other characteristic, populist (or what is sometimes called "Jacksonian") nationalism, has its roots in a wounded, embittered, and defensive white America, centered primarily in the American South. Where the "Creed" is optimistic and triumphant, Jacksonian nationalism is fueled by deep pessimism and a sense of personal, social, religious, and one-sided defeat. Lieven examines how these two opposing impulses have played out in recent US policies, particularly in the Middle East, and in the nature of US support for Israel. He suggests that in this region, the difficult mix of policies based on two conflicting traditions has seriously undermined America's credibility and made the war on terror more difficult. It has never been more important for Americans to understand our national character. This scathing critique sheds light on the American political soul and the curious mix of chauvinism and idealism that fueled the Bush administration.
